Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a leading strategy to achieve high sensitivity for gene detection and identification. However, the acceptance of SERS as a general analytical tool has been hindered somewhat by the lack of systematic development of substrate technology. This work presents a study on the SERS properties of novel engineered silver nanoparticle island substrates and their applications for target oligonucleotide detection.
