Abstract

Relative light-scattering cross sections from K smoke particles were measured. Comparisons were made with cross sections calculated from Mie theory, using optical constants measured by Palmer and Schnatterly, Smith, and Monin and Boutry. Results are not consistent with the constants measured by Palmer and Schnatterly. However, the use of Smith’s data does produce agreement providing it is assumed that the K smoke was composed of monodisperse spheres with an impurity level of less than 0.1%. This composition would be consistent with previous work on Na smoke.
