Abstract

Mean radiative lifetimes have been measured for several levels of singly ionized nitrogen, using the ion-beam technique with an N2+ beam. The lifetimes in nanoseconds are given in parentheses following the state: 3p 1D2 (8.8±0.3), 4f 3G (7.3±0.4), 3d 3F°2,3 (8.6±0.6), 3d 3F°4 (11.0±1.1), 3p 3D (16.5±0.6). In each case, the uncertainty is the standard deviation from the mean of several independent values. In addition, the lifetime of the combined 3d 3F2,3.4 levels was measured with both N+ and N2+ beams, yielding a value of 9.9±1.0 ns. Systematic errors associated with the method make each of the above lifetimes uncertain by amounts ranging from 10% to 25%.
