Abstract

The Sénarmont method is convenient for measuring flow birefringence in the conventional concentric cylinder apparatus. Unless the light is monochromatic, and the quarter-wave plate is exact, errors are introduced. Also, dichroism due to attenuation by either absorption or scattering can cause errors. Equations for these errors are derived and illustrated by numerical examples.
