Abstract

A modification of a method developed by Weber and Teale is described which permits determination of fluorescence yields upon excitation to narrow, atomic energy levels. This is applied to solutions of Eu(NO3)3 · 6H2O in CH3OH and Eu(NO3)3 in CH3OD. Upper europic ion levels (5D0, 5D1, 5D2, 5D3 and 5L7) are individually excited and the emission from the 5D0 level is observed. Results show that (a) fluorescence yields are higher in the CH3OD than in the CH3OH solution, (b) the probabilities of populating the 5D0 level from higher-lying levels are less than unity, and (c) these probabilities are nearly equal in the CH3OH and CH3OD solutions.
