Substitution of an air interrupter for the rotary gap on this spark source is not practical as the transformer lacks power to charge the capacitors to sparking potential several times per second. A separate unit is described which is powered by the transformer in the original unit. Changeover from conventional operation with the rotary gap to air interruption is rapid and convenient.
To study single patterns, a camera synchronizing attachment has been built that makes it possible to photograph a single trace on an ordinary oscilloscope with green, medium persistence screen. An Eastman Twin Lens Reflex camera was used. The moving contact that is built into the shutter closes the circuit to charge a condenser after the leaves are fully open. This potential is applied to the vertical plates of the oscilloscope and produces a single horizontal sweep across the screen. The shutter time is made long enough to take advantage of the full persistence period of the trace. Fully exposed photographs of single sweeps can be obtained on Verichrome film.
