From 15th to 21st April 2014, the Institute of Physics-Optical Society (IOP-OSA) Student Chapter held the third Travelling Lecturer Program sponsored by The Optical Society (OSA). The invitee, scientist Oliver Mücke from DESY CFEL in Hamburg, Germany, visited Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOP, CAS) and made academic exchange with the professors and student members of IOP.
Lecture title: Toward Waveform Nonlinear Optics Using High-Energy Sub-Optical- Cycle Waveform Synthesizers
On 15th and 17th April, Prof. Mücke was invited to give two lectures in IOP, CAS and Peking University, respectively. The lectures attracted around 40 audiences working on the related fields. The speaker's work on ultrafast and high-energy optics was impressive and shared many insights. The participants gained a lot from the lecture, and it will also serve to promote networking between different sections as well.
We held a brown-bag seminar following the lecture in our institute. Scientist Mücke joined in this seminar and communicated with our chapter members and our advisor Prof. Ling-An Wu. Five student members introduced and discussed their works, and the participants proposed useful ideas and suggestions. We harvested valuable experience in the relaxing atmosphere.
After the seminar, scientist Mücke was accompanied to visit labs in our institute and made an in-depth discussion with Prof. Zhiyi Wei about the work. This academic exchange laid the foundation for the future cooperation of two sections.
After three-day academic exchange, we accompanied scientist Mücke to travel around the Beijing city in order to let him understand Chinese culture better. We visited many famous scenic spots, such as the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall, which showed the charm of Chinese traditional culture. Scientist Mücke was surprised by the intoxicating sceneries, and he was full of praise for the Chinese food as well.
We appreciate this OSA Travelling Lecturer Program very much, and our student chapter has benefited a lot from that. Besides promoting the academic exchange, we also establish the friendship with other sections, which would create opportunity for the potential cooperation. We are looking forward to the next activity and hope more and more students will join in and benefit from our program.
We acknowledge OSA for the sponsorship and IOP and Peking University for the support.
Oliver D. Mücke received his Diploma and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the Universität Karlsruhe (now KIT), Germany in 1999 and 2003, respectively. He worked was a postdoc at the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics in Cambridge, MA, USA (09/2003-02/2007) and at the Photonics Institute at Vienna University of Technology, Austria (03/2007-07/2011). Since 07/2011 he is a Senior Scientist at DESY CFEL in Hamburg, Germany. His research interests include CEP-stable few-cycle pulse generation from octave-spanning Ti:sapphire oscillators and parametric amplifiers, high-energy multi-octave waveform synthesis, strong-field physics and attoscience, highly efficient intense THz-pulse generation, laser-driven sources of particles and hard-X-rays, frequency-comb technology for optical clocks, extreme nonlinear optics in solids and nanostructures. In 2013 he was member and since 2014 is chair of the CLEO/QELS Subcommittee on High-Field Physics and Attoscience.
