Through OSA's Traveling Lecturer program, OSA members visit NJU annually. Since Traveling Lecturer Programs are designed to be activities for communication opportunities between students and scholars, we focused on lecturers with great research achievements or a wealth of experience with student chapter affairs. Therefore, we invited Prof. Silvano Donati form Pavia University in Italy and Dr. Dan Christensen, Product Line Manager & Key Customer Manager, from Toptica Ltd. Company in the U.S. in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
We appreciate the value of thought and experience from lecturers, and we want to meet various speakers to open doors to different life for the future professional development. During Prof. Donati's visit (28th March–2nd April 2017) to Nanjing University, he delivered three speeches to students including undergraduates, Master's students and Ph. D students. It is really an unforgettable week. Prof. Donati gave two speeches to Master's and Ph. D students. One was about his research results and the other focused on paving a research career path. In another speech given to undergraduate students, he told stories about developments in the optical field and encouraged students to stay curious and love scientific research.
Dr. Christensen is another traveling lecturer with a role of OSA ambassador. During his visit (12th-13th March 2018), he had a conversation with officers from OSA and SPIE student chapters at Nanjing University and Nanjing University of Science and Technology. He also delivered a talk about how to choose a position in optical industries. He inspired students to get involved in Student Chapter activities so that they could know more about their peers' ideas and lives. In addition, he suggested taking advantages of OSA's abundant resources and trying to pay back when we grow up. These meaningful activities are a great benefit to students.
