Unsupported selenium films with a thickness of a few microns, which are used for infrared and near infrared transmission polarizers (1,2,3), are generally very fragile. The use of this type of polarizer has accordingly been rather restricted. For application in the near infrared, the removal of the formvar® films used by Ames and Sampson (2) as a support for the formation of the selenium films has been found unnecessary. The procedure for preparing such polarizers is described in this note.
