Abstract
It has been known for a long time that optical amplifiers should have very low noise characteristics because their only noise source would be spontaneous emission. Early theoretical work on the quantum noise limit in an optical amplifier quantified the noise in the amplified signal by use of a noise temperature Tn. In addition, early experiments showed that the noise from an optical amplifier was near the quantum limit when a mode-selecting device was used to ensure detection of only one mode.
