Low-intensity chaotic operations of a laser with a saturable absorber

Abstract

It is well known that the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a single-mode ring laser exhibit Lorentz instability leading to chaotic dynamics. However, the threshold for this instability requires a set of parameter values that are hardly accessible in experiment. Several recent studies demonstrate that adding a saturable absorber lowers the threshold for Lorentz instability. In the present study we show that for suitable parameter values, the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a laser with a saturable absorber (LSA) exhibit small-intensity chaotic motion near the lasing threshold.
