Hyper-Raman scattering and multiphoton ionization: competitive effects

Abstract

Several experimental and theoretical studies have shown interference effects leading to suppression of hyper-Raman scattering (HRS) by four-wave mixing (FWM)1,2 or by competition between multiphoton ionization (MPI) and third-harmonic generation (THG).3-5 Resonance-enhanced MPI constitutes an alternative channel to HRS in a nonlinear medium. To study competitive effects in these two processes, we consider a homogeneously broadened two-photon pumped three-level system interacting with the pump and hyper-Raman fields (Fig. 1). Density-matrix equations for the system in the absence of ionization were obtained in a previous paper6 by adiabatic elimination of the density matrix elements referring to the nonresonant set of discrete intermediate levels {|i〉}. Here we extend the model to include the positive-energy continuum states |ω> by the method of photoionization rates.7,8
