Abstract
There has been an increasing interest in the inhibition of propagation in periodic structures ever since the existence of full three-dimensional photonic band gaps was first suggested.1,2 Experimental results obtained at microwave frequencies3 have confirmed the existence of such gaps; other results obtained in one-dimensional geometries4,5 have shown clear evidence that lower-dimensionality structures exhibit strong reduction of rates of spontaneous emission.
