Abstract

UV-induced index changes approaching 10-4 in germanosilicate fibers have been reported,1 Fiber gratings can be written into these fibers by interfering UV light into the core.2,3 Narrowband gratings of this type have many applications, e.g., mode-selection in fiber lasers, WDM telecommunications, and sensors. They are compact, easy to align, tunable, and less likely to be damaged in high-power applications.
