Abstract

There has been dramatic progress in use of femtosecond optical pulses for the development and characterization of picosecond far-infrared light sources and detectors.1·2 Far-infrared (~1 THz) generation techniques based on Hertzian dipole emission from biased ultra fast photoconductive antennas, Cherenkov radiation in electro-optic crystals, and charge acceleration via the built-in electric field present at semiconductor surfaces have been reported.
