Resonant multiphoton Ionization of noble gases by intense picosecond UV laser radiation

Abstract

Resonant enhancement in the ion yield from multiphoton ionization of noble gas atoms by well-characterized high-intensity (3 × 1012–3 × 1014-W/cm–2) W/cm–2) picosecond tunable UV laser beams has been observed.2 Detailed three-photon Kr resonance profiles for 4p–4d, 4p–4d1, and 4p–5d are presented as a function of peak laser intensity. The profiles, after convolution with the spatiotemporal intensity profile of the laser beam, are well fitted by a simple model incorporating line shifts and widths scaling linearly with intensity. An absolute intensity scale is established by recording the energy spectra of photonionized electrons, which is directly related to the intensity at which they were ejected for short-pulse irradiation.3
