Abstract
The nonclassical effects of collapse and revival of the population inversion of a two-level atom interacting with a single-mode radiation field in a coherent state have been studied theoretically1 and observed experimentally.2 Recently, new field states (so-called binomial states) have been introduced which interpolate between pure number states and coherent states.3 These new states are linear combinations of number states having a binomial photon distribution. By varying a single parameter, the character of these binomial states can be changed from that of pure number states to that of coherent states, thus enabling the system dynamics to be studied with changing photon statistics.
