Abstract
A bistable system can be prepared on the unstable branch of the system’s steady state diagram (the S curve) through a two-step procedure (Fig. 1). One first biases the system to a value within the hysteresis width so that it rests in one of the three coexisting states. One then applies a switching pulse of suitable amplitude A and duration Ton top of the bias. The system will start to switch to the other stable branch, but after time T the switching is aborted (frustrated switching).
