Abstract

We have developed an efficient method of generating tunable picosecond pulses in the region of 243nm by frequency doubling a synchronously pumped mode-locked coumarin 102 dye laser in a crystal of beta barium borate placed in an external enhancement ring cavity. Average ultraviolet powers in excess of 30mW have been generated corresponding to conversion efficiencies in excess of 10%, There are many application for this source in photo-chemistry and biology. Our own application is the observation of the 1S-2S transition in atomic hydrogen using the technique of Doppler-free two-photon coherent multiple pulse spectroscopy.
