Laser spectroscopy of two-electron systems

Abstract

The helium atom and hydrogen molecule are the simplest multielectron systems and are thus much used as prototypes in which theoretical and experimental methods can be compared in detail. Improvements in spectroscopic studies of these fundamental systems have always been difficult because of the large excitation energies required. This problem has recently become far less severe with the availability of intense tunable narrowband UV laser sources. Two experiments completed recently in our laboratory are representative of current advances: the ionization potential of H2 and high resolution spectra of autoionizing Stark line shapes in atomic helium.
