Elimination of spatial hole burning in solid-state lasers using anisotropic nanostructured thin films

Abstract

Birefringent layers deposited on top of laser mirrors enable the elimination of the nodes of the intra-cavity standing wave pattern by forcing the polarization states of counter-propagating waves to be orthogonal, resulting in single-mode emission.
