The importance of low-transmission-loss characteristics in'optical fibers has been well recognized for use in future economical fiber transmission systems. In order to realize low-loss optical fiber and cable, we have made experimental and theoritical study for the settlement of basic problems inherent to fiber and cable manufacturing. In this paper, we discuss two important factors for transmission loss in multimode step index fibers; scattering loss due to dopants and additional loss affected by OH-absoiption in fused silica jacket attached arround cladding. Transmission characteristics of a cable composed of four-fiber-units are also discussed in relation to side pressure or microbending.
