Abstract

In many applications of fiber optic waveguides, resistance to the effects of radiation is a requirement (1). Although there has been considerable prior effort to characterize the radiation response of various fiber optic waveguides and materials (2-3), these studies have generally been carried out on short lengths of fibers which can only be measurably darkened at doses which are much higher than might be encountered in the field. In the present study we have examined the low dose transient and steady state radiation response of longer lengths of fiber optic waveguides and have found that some fibers previously observed to be resistant to radiation (2) display an enhanced sensitivity at low dose which may render them unacceptable in radiation environments.
