Abstract

Research activities on polymeric coating of optical fibers at Bell Laboratories are reviewed. Coatings that have been studied include polymeric gels, low molecular weight and high molecular weight polymer melts, and UV curable epoxy acrylates. When a proper coating is applied in such a way that no damage is produced on the glass surface of a carefully drawn fiber, free of other flaws, the coating serves to preserve the strength comparable to that of pristine fibers. Special techniques for applying such a coating has been developed. The influence of various coating systems on fatigue and dynamic strengths, microbending, and abrasion resistance will be briefly summarized. Problems of stripping a strong coating will be discussed. Detailed reports on studies of some of these systems will be individually reported elsewhere in the Conference as contributed papers.
