Abstract

A number of recent experiments have demonstrated multi-Gbit/s long-span optical fiber transmission1,2 to meet the future demand for higher transmission capacity. On the other hand, it is also possible to increase the transmission capacity by the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique. For example, 1.3- and 1.5-μm WDM systems can double the transmission capacity. However, it is difficult to realize the multi-Gbit/s 1.3/1.5-μm WDM systems, because the chromatic dispersion of normal (1.3-μm zero dispersion) optical fiber is large in the 1.5-μm wavelength region.3
