Abstract
Much work has been reported on the study of integrated optical waveguides fabricated by ion exchange in glass.1 Multimode couplers have become commercially available.2 However, research on buried single-mode waveguides made by the two-step ion-exchange process has only recently been reported.3 The versatility of this technique makes feasible the volume production of complicated structures such as large 1 × n couplers which are Inherently achromatic.
