Abstract
The dynamic tensile fatigue data for optical fiber whose cladding surface is composed of silica doped with a small amount of TiO2 were reported recently1 and found to be superior to that for 100% silica-clad fiber. The n value, in tension, of 29.5 is obtained for this fiber compared with 22.5 for pure silica-clad fiber. The former fiber has continued to excel in static two-point bend tests with no observed failure over a 2-yr period2 at strains in excess of 2%. The static bend data provide an estimate of n exceeding 200. The fundamental mechanism for improved fatigue resistance of the titania-doped silia-clad fiber is under investigation and will be reported in the future.
