Influence of coatings on fiber reliability

Abstract

It is widely recognized that coatings, and the processes used for applying them, play a major role in determining the performance properties of optical fibers.1,2 Specifically affected are fiber strength, static fatigue properties, and transmission losses, especially those connected with packaging and temperature-dependent microbending phenomena. It is reasonable to conclude, therefore, that coating reliability affects the reliability of the performance properties of the fiber.
