Abstract

Many types of optical device such as multiplexers, switches, branching circuits, attenuators, and couplers have been proposed for optical information distribution in fiber communication systems.1 Multifunction devices are of particular interest because they have lower losses than the combination of single function devices that performs the same operation. A reduction of size and weight is being achieved by multifunction devices. We report the design and characteristics of a device incorporating a wavelength demultiplexer and star coupler.
