Abstract

This paper calculates the power penalty incurred in the carrier recovery process due to the average linewidth of the laser source and local oscillator in a PSK heterodyne system. The numerical computation developed features two advantages not present in previous treatments: (1) the effects of the nonlinearity are treated exactly; (2) a probability distribution for the filtered output is obtained (within the assumption of a Markov process) without resorting to upper bounds.
