Abstract

This paper is concerned with the use of lasers with substantial phase noise in coherent optical systems. The aim is to compare current theories for coherent receiver performance as affected by phase noise, to highlight the main predictions of these theories, and to suggest why many coherent system experiments have failed to approach the level of performance which is theoretically possible.
