Segmented-core fiber for long-haul and local-area-network applications

Abstract

Single-mode fiber with its low loss and very high bandwidth is the fiber of choice in long-haul applications. But for loop and local-area-network (LAN) applications with inexpensive source and connector requirements, it is desirable to combine this low loss, high bandwidth, and upgradeability of a single-mode fiber with the easy connectorization possible with a multimode fiber. Some of these attributes can be partially achieved in a fiber by proper tuning of its properties in the single-mode and few-mode regions of operation. The design attributes and experimental results on such a fiber are presented.
