Abstract

The evolution of coherent optical communication techniques is characterized by applying well-known principles of radio communications. Increasing receiver sensitivity by using optical heterodyning has stimulated the first experiments on coherent long-distance transmission. On the other hand, the high-frequency selectivity of the heterodyne receiver due to filtering in the microwave region allows optical multicarrier systems to be established which make use of the high-fiber bandwidth and is suitable for a comparable simple distribution technique of broadband channels in local loops and the subscriber area.1,2 In Germany the first experiments on coherent optical transmission were carried out at the Heinrich-Hertz-Institut consequently by assembling a multicarrier experimental system to encounter related problems.3-5
