Because of their large electroabsorption effect, optical modulators made with MQWs are attractive candidates for external modulators in optical fiber systems.’ However, it was recently pointed out that phase modulation accompanying the intensity modulation could lead to frequency broadening of the optical beam leaving the modulator.2 Such broadening has been observed In semiconductor lasers and is known as chirp.3
