The tremendous growth in the manufacture and deployment of fiber-optic systems has resulted in a great number of optically incompatible systems. Currently, the fiber-optic terminals of one supplier cannot communicate optically with those of another supplier since each supplier's optical signal is different. There is no accepted optical signal standard, and, therefore, for two terminals to be compatible, they must be purchased from the same supplier.
