Minitutorial: fiber-optic cables and their mechanical properties

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Since their initial conception more than a decade ago, fiber-optic cables have shown an outstanding performance record. Based on very little data on the long-term stability of optical fibers, cables have been developed with major emphasis on maintaining the mechanical and optical properties for a 20-40-yr lifetime. This minitutorial discusses design considerations, performance data, and field experiences of optical cables.
