Abstract

The proton exchange (PE) technique for waveguide fabrication in lithium niobate1 has evoked considerable interest because of the possibilities offered by the high value of the extraordinary index increase δne,.2–4 However, up to now the problem of high loss was not resolved. The commonly accepted values for the losses were between 2.4 and 4 dB/cm at 0.6328 μm.5
