Minitutorlal: fiber fabrication and characteristics

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

This tutorial reviews the basic properties and fabrication of optical fibers. The optical properties covered include loss, dispersion, numerical aperture, and spot size for single-mode and multimode fibers. The effect of adverse environments such as high temperatures, hydrogen, and radiation on the fiber properties is also discussed. In addition the fiber drawing and major preform fabrication processes (MCVD, PCVD, VAD, and OVD) are reviewed.
