Abstract

Recently, there have been several efforts to explore the behavior of coherent systems operating at high data rates. Heterodyne transmission experiments at 1 Gb/s have been reported using DPSK [1] and FSK [2] modulation formats, and more recently FSK transmission at 1.6 Gb/s has been achieved [3]. In this paper we report for the first time FSK heterodyne transmission at 2 Gb/s. A detected power of -39.2 dBm at 10−9 bit-error-ratio is achieved, corresponding to an improvement of 0.8 dB over the best reported APD direct detection result at this data rate [4]. Furthermore, no additional penalty is incurred as a result of transmission through 101 km of single-mode fiber, as compared to a 5.3 dB added penalty for 141 km fiber in the direct detection result.
