Abstract

For those of us who lived through the multicomponent glass era of optical fiber research, the dread of contamination of gel derived bodies by airborne or process-induced contaminants was an awesome threat. Sample purity was severely degraded during batching, mixing, and melting of the raw materials. While sol-gel preparation is subject to many of the same sources of contamination, these essentially can be eliminated by our dehydration/consolidation treatment which favors removal of transition metal ions and most other members of the periodic table.
