Abstract

Methods for fabricating both single-mode and multimode fiber lightguides are reviewed with particular focus on the major production techniques (MCVD, PCVD, OVD, and VAD) for preparing the precursor glass preform as well as the fiber drawing and coating step for high-performance lightguides. Processing is discussed in the context of the requirements necessary to control the optical, dimensional, and mechanical properties of the resultant lightguide transmission medium.
