Abstract

Due to the absence of interference effects and instabilities, LEDs may be preferable to lasers for many communication applications. Normally LEDs are used with multimode fibers,1 since their coupling efficiency to monomode fibers is considered too small. In this paper we show, however, that with edge-emitting diodes sufficient light power can be launched even into a monomode fiber to span more than 10 km.
