The commercial success of single-mode fiber communication systems has created an increased need to focus clearly on those measurements required for functional product specification. Table I summarizes these needs for current product types and includes some process control parameters as well as the common functional measurements. These measurements have continued to undergo development to increase accuracy and reproducibility and to decrease cost through rate improvements and sampling plans. The methods that have previously been discussed appear fairly suitable for factor requirements, but several trends and future requirements are becoming clear and must be addressed.
