Abstract

A distributed feedback laser (DFB-LD) operating at 1.5 μm-wavelength is the most promising light source for long distance, high bit rate optical transmission systems. However, even in the DFB-LD, optical feedbacks from a single mode fiber ends cause output fluctuation which may bring additional loss penalty into the transmission system. Therefore, an optical isolator should be employed to achieve stable single mode operation of the DFB-LD. Here we report on the compact laser module in which the 1.5 μm-wavelength DFB-LD, the optical isolator and the single mode fiber are integrated.
