Abstract

The basic operating principles of LEDs and injection lasers, as well as the transmitters designed for them, are reviewed. Then, mostly with emphasis on lasers, new directions are discussed including high-bit-rate operation, device and subsystem means of obtaining single-frequency operation, and reliability considerations.
