Simple theory of optical dual-filter heterodyne FSK receivers with non-negligible (semiconductor) laser linewidths

Abstract

Ideally, optical receivers for FSK systems using narrow linewidth lasers are expected to be 3 dB more sensitive (in peak power) than heterodyne ASK receivers. Since semiconductor lasers can be directly frequency-modulated with suitable equalization, FSK looks like an attractive option for coherent wideband networks, with a very large multiplexing potential. Here we model the effects of non-negligible laser linewidth on dual-filter heterodyne FSK receivers and compare FSK with heterodyne ASK systems discussed in a companion paper.1
