Abstract

The rapid introduction of single-mode fibers in the local access and transport areas (LATA) will cause far-reaching impact on the network topology and new service capabilities. Until now, the singlemode fibers, like the multimode fibers, have been deployed exclusively in point-to-point links with direct modulation of laser currents. For Intercity transmission where long repeater spacing and high-bit-rate transmission are of primary interest, this is and shall remain an effective way of using single-mode technology.
