Twenty years of optical fiber communication: from reverie to reality

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The history of optical fiber communications is traced from early research on low-loss glass materials in the mid 1960s through first commercial introduction of multimode fiber systems in the late 1970s to the present research thrusts on high-speed local area networks and multigigabit single-mode systems.
