Low-loss hermetically coated optical fiber

Abstract

It has been reported that the mechanical strength of hermetically coated fibers, particularly, the static fatigue properties, is excelient.1,2 But the transmission loss of hermetically coated fibers was a little bit higher than that of organic material-coated fibers. The excess loss of the hermetically coated fiber was attributed to microbending caused by the shrinkage of the coating material such as aluminum or tin. Indium coating is one method to prevent microbending loss because its melting point is low, but indium is an expensive material.3
