Abstract
The modified chemical vapor deposition process utilizes a fused quartz substrate tube to form a cladding into which ultrapure glass is deposited forming a core. Thus the preform and fiber core- to-cladding ratio are determined by the volume of deposited glass and the volume of the cladding tube. During the fabrication process, the tube is heated on the outside by an oxyhydrogen torch, which evaporates (mills) some of the substrate glass (Fig. 1).
